March 20, 1881
My Dear Sister:
I take this opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know
that I am still alive. I am living in the Bridge of Weir this 32
years and I am getting very frail. I have lost the sight of one of my
eyes. My husband's name is Joseph Houston. We are living alone. I had
five sons the oldest his name was Samuel. He went to America in 1863.
I have not heard from him for 15 years. He said when he went away he
would look for you. The next was William. He is living in the Bridge
of Weir and married. The next was Robert. He is living in Paisley and
married. The next was Joseph ~ he died at the age of 20, so you can
see we are all pretty well scattered. My sister Margret and I is 2
miles apart and we are not able to see one another very often as there
is no conveyance between us and for George I have not heard from him
for some time. I hope and trust that you will answer this note. I
wrote to my brother John and he never answered it. I hope George's
daughter Fergie is getting along well. My husband joins in sending his
kind love to you all. I have little more to say to you only longing
very much to hear from you.
Write soon.
I remain your loving and affectionate sister ~ Jane Gold.
