  5. [S382] Eurika Times-Standard, Michael Joseph Galyean passed away at his home in Hoopa on October 29, 2004. A native and resident of Hoopa, he was 59.

Michael Galyean or “Mike G” as his friends knew him, was a storyteller in the truest sense of the word. His tales of myth and legend captured and held his audiences with delightful fascination. His charming smile and sensitive care of the people he loved and cherished the most was felt throughout his daily life. All who knew him unrepentantly loved him. He was joy and mirth and beauty in the face of adversity and loyalty and strength in hours of need. He made us laugh till the muscles in our jaws and stomach cramped and the tears and snorts of hilarity could be heard over the mountain. In his younger years, he fancied himself a barber and studied at the Frederick and Charles Institute. His love of nature led him to work in the woods as a logger for 41 years. Uncle Mike was an avid reader. He loved fishing and teaching his grandchildren the importance and beauty of their culture, language and heritage.

He is survived by his daughters, Kimberly Obie of Hoopa, and Melva Hurn of Arcata; his sisters, Faith Roesener and her husband Walter, Rosa Galyean of Orleans, CA, and Sylvia Littlefield and husband Roscoe of Weitchpec; his brother, John Galyean and wife Francis of Blue Lake; his grandchildren, Michelle, Miranda, Mike, Miles, Richard, Sophia, Tristin and Dominick; and great-grandchild, Lawrence Mitchell. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, Anna, Stephanie, Laurie, Gayla, Gilbert, Gerald, Garth, Jeffrey, William, Greg, David, Gary, Timothy, Wayne Lee, James, Richard and Toby.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Thelma Mahon and father, Auburn Galyean.

Visitations will be held at Paul’s Chapel, 1070 H Street, Arcata, on Thursday, November 4, 2004, from noon to 5 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Services will be held at Paul’s Chapel on Friday, November 5, at 11a.m. Scott Chez will officiate. Interment will follow the services at the Wausek Cemetery.

A pot luck reception will follow the services at the Yurok Tribal Community Office in Weitchpec.

Casket bearers will be Alan Bear, David Galyean, Simp Reed, Richard Rutherford, Jr., Jeffery Roesener, and Gary Albers, Jr. Honorary casket bearers are Bob Rakestraw, Willard Carlson, Buddy Bear, Austin Rakestraw, David Reece, Gilbert Myers, Gary Albers, Sr., Bill Wilson, Bill Crutchfield, Butch Reed and Ron Reed.

NUCLA - How many times would the phone ring in the middle of the night, on the other end of the line would be the same familiar greeting, "Hey, what are you doing?" Every response would be, "Sleeping." In return would be, "Oh, is it night time there?" It is ironic, or fitting, that we learned in the middle of the night, by a ringing phone, not of some Navy adventure, but of our dear Samuel's passing from this world into the arms of his Lord and Savior.

Sam was born on Halloween, Oct. 31, 1969, to Dewey and Jody Galyean in Grand Junction, Colo. Sam spent his childhood in the West End, going to school in Nucla, Naturita, the old Basin school, and Uravan, graduating from Nucla High School in 1988. During his childhood, Sam began developing his adventurous lifestyle that continued throughout his life. Never idle for a moment, Sam played football, basketball, baseball, wrestled, tried to ride bulls and be a cowboy, bucked bales, hunted, fished, and took part in so many more activities too numerous to name or best keep secret. That was Sam.

Not only did Sam live this adventurous lifestyle, but also he created many relationships that best exemplified him, as the old saying goes "a friend of all, stranger to none." Not one stranger would continue being a stranger in Sam's midst; creating friends in all corners of the world. That was Sam.

From the boy to the man, Sam was so friendly and too, so talented. Sam was a master at anything he would so choose. He could have been an inventor, given him an idea and a few minutes, the most intricate contraption would be created. He should have been a cook. The amazing meals created were always accompanied by at least one person saying, "Sam, you need to open up your own caf?!" Sam should have been and could have been many things, but Sam was a welder, a workhorse, a man that always put in a full day's work. Sam was the person and the man of which we were all proud. That was Sam.

Upon graduating from high school, Sam embarked on a stellar four-year career in the United States Navy. Sam's Navy experience fit perfectly with his zest for adventure. Sam was able to see all parts of the world and had a story for each one. Sam earned many awards and citations while in the Navy. While aboard the U.S.S. Longbeach is where Sam became that expert welder.

In 1993, Sam married the woman he truly loved, Becky Tabor of Naturita, Colo., even through the tough times in the end. Through this union, Sam's reason for existence was created in the birth of his two sons, Jerod Michael in 1994, and Joshua James in 1996. Sam's boys were his whole life. Sam idolized his two boys, living for every moment he could spend with them. Sam was so proud of his boys: who they were, what they accomplished, and will be exceptionally proud of the men that they will become.

Sam is survived by his two boys, Jerod Michael and Joshua James, of Carlin, Nev.; mother, Jody Galyean, of Nucla; father and stepmother, Dewey and Linda Galyean, of Pagosa Spring; grandfather, Joe Nelson, of Nucla; grandmother, Dorothy Williams, of Oracle, Ariz.; a brother and sister-in-aw, Hank and Shari Nelson, of Nucla; a sister and brother-in-law, Kimberly and Toby Efurd, of Redvale, Colo.; and many other aunts, uncles, cousins and those thousands of friends throughout the world.

Sam was preceded in death by his grandmother, Iva Mae Nelson; grandfather, Charles "Red" Galyean; uncle, Michael James Nelson; and uncle, Monte Galyean.

Sam was an exceptional human being that was so loving, accepting, and could bring out more emotions at one time in a person. His famous telephone greeting of "Harro," will be missed, along with everything else that he blessed us. We all love you, Sambo, we will all see you soon.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held in Carlin, Nev., on Saturday, June 26. A local memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 1, at 10 a.m. at the Union Congregational Church in Nucla, followed by a graveside service in the Nucla Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled under the direction and care of the Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory of Montrose, (970) 249-2121.
