LAKIN, VERNA SMITH--age 98, died Monday, March 8, 2004. She graduated from the University of Tennessee Magna Cum Lauda. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Hubert Lakin. She taught for over 30 years in the Knox County Public Schools, mostly at Inskip Elementary. She was a member of the Fountain City Christian Church. She is survived by: her daughters & sons-in-law, Vanda & Roger Thayer & Patricia & Jack Watson; four grandchildren, Edmond Lakin Thayer, Cinnamon Thayer, Bradley Watson, & Amanda Duncan; two grandchildren-in-law, Janalin Watson & Joel Watson; a sister, Margaret Kitts; & brother Fred Smith. The family would like to express appreciation to Karen Payne, close companion and helper, and devoted staff of the Shannondale Health Care Center. Family and friends will meet at 10:45 am Friday at Sherwood Memorial Gardens for grave site at 11 am. Rev. Darrell Cook officiating.
