Luddy, grinder and polisher of metals, was born in hartford , Conn1.,in 1847, son of Thomas and Catherine Luddy. At the age of ten years he went to work in Colt's Armory, in Hartford, where he remained six years. He then went to Troy, N.Y., in the employ of the United States Government at the Watervlit Arsenal. After six months he accepted a position with Grover & Baker Sewing Machine Company, being in the Star Manufactory Works, at Dartmouth, N.S. In 1871 he went to sea. For one year he was millwright in the Revere Sugar Refinery, at Cambridge, Mass. In 1875 he went to the Black Hills. After his return, in December of that year, he located in Chicago and the Wilson Sewing Machine Company for three years. In 1879 he engaged with the Sigwalt Sewing Machine Company as foreman in his department, where he still remains. He was married in 1879 to Miss Julia Coppins, daughter of William and Mary Coppins. They had two children- Willie and Nellie.
