(These Johns, who were both known by the surnameBretagne rather than de Braine, may be regarded respectively as 2nd and3rd Earls of Richmond of the January 1218/9 creation.) John the younger(ie. the 3rd Earl), who was temporarily deprived of his estates inEngland in 1296 for siding with the French, married a daughter of HenryIII. He was killed by a wall falling on him in Lyons for the coronationof Pope Clement V in 1305. On his death Edward I asserted a right to theEarldom of Richmond, together with its castles and territories, but ayear later conferred the title on the late Earl's second son John, whothus became 4th Earl of Richmond. Like his predecessors he too sufferedtemporary confiscation of his estates by the Crown, this time in 1326,though they were given back to him later that year, on 25 Decemberapproximately. EARLDOM OF RICHMOND (VII, 3)

JOHN (DE BRETAGNE), DUKE OF BRITTANY and EARL OF RICHMOND, 1st son andheir, was born 3 Jan 1238/9, and baptised by Cadioc, Bishop of Vannes. On13 October 1260, he was knighted in London by Henry III. He succeeded tothe Earldom of Richmond on his father's resignation in 1268; and on 25November 1268 he was granted the honor and Rape of Hastings. On 28January 1268/9 he had licence to mortgage some of the lands of the honorof Richmond for 2,000 marks, with a view to going on Crusade; and in 1270he accompanied his father to the siege of Tunis. After the death of St.Louis he swore fealty to Philip III; and he was one of the commanders ofthe main division at the defeat of the Saracens before Tunis. He thenprorceeded to Palestine with his brother-in-law, Prince Edward. On 19August 1274 he was present at Edward's Coronation. In December 1276 hewas summoned to serve in person against Llewelyn. In 1285 he took part inthe French invasion of Aragon. In 1296 he adhered to the French and losthis English lands. In 1297 he fought for the French against the Flemings;and in September 1297 Philip created him a peer of France. He was one ofthe French representatives in the negotiations for a truce at Tournay in1297; and his English lands were restored for the term of the truce 1April 1298 and definitively 1 May 1304. He was one of the nobles whoescorted Margaret of France to England, and he was present at hermarriage to Edward I on 12 September 1299. In 1304 he obtained a grant ofpontage for 3 years, for mending a bridge at Boston. On 18 August 1304 hefought for the French against the Flemings at Mons en Puelle. Hejourneyed to Lyons in 1305 for the Coronation of Pope Clement V; and inthe course of the procession there on 14 November he was mortally injuredby the collapse of a wall.

He married, 22 January 1259/60, at the abbey of St. Denis, near Paris,Beatrice, 2nd daughter of HENRY III, King of England, by Eleanor, 2nddaughter and coheir of Raymond, COUNT OF PROVENCE. Beatrice, who was born25 June 1242, at Bordeaux, died 24 March 1274/5, and was buried in theGrey Friars, London, her heart being buried in the abbey of Fontevrault,Anjou. John died 16 or 17 Nov. I PS, at Lyons, and was buried in thechurch of the Carmelites at Ploërmel, Brittany.[b] Will dated September1302, confirmed with alteration 5 July 1304. [b] His body was embalmed, shrouded, sewn into leather and put into aleaden coffin, which, after a service in the church of St. Just in Lyons,was transported to Roanne and thence by the Loire to Brittany. The churchof the Carmelites at Ploermel was destroyed at the Revolution, but therecumbent effigy from his tomb is now in the parish church.

She was born on 25 June 1242 at Bordeaux, France.2 She was the daughter of Henry III Plantagenet King of England and Eleanor Berenger Countess of Provence, Queen of England. Beatrice Plantagenet , Princess of England married John II Duke de Brittany , Earl of Richmond, son of John I Duke de Brittany , Earl of Richmond and Blanche Princess of Navarre, between 22 January 1259 and 1260 at St Denis Abbey near Paris, Ile-de-France, France.2 Beatrice Plantagenet , Princess of England died between 24 March 1274 and 1275 at Grey Friars Church, London, Middlesex, England.2

     Guy II de Chatillon Comte de St. Pol was born circa 1225 at St. Pol, Nord, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.2 He was the son of Hugh V de Chatillon Comte de Blois & St. Pol and Marie d' Avesnes , Comtesse de Blois. Guy II de Chatillon Comte de St. Pol married Mahaut (Maud) of Brabant, daughter of Henry II 'Magnanimus' Duke of Brabant and Marie von Hohenstauffen , of Swabia, on 31 May 1254. Guy II de Chatillon Comte de St. Pol died between 12 March 1288 and 1289.2

Guy II inherited St. Pol from his niece, d. 1289, and by Mathilde ofBrabant had three sons, most notably Hugh II of Blois and Guy III of St.Pol. Hugh's descendants, the counts of Blois, Soissons and Penthievre,included St. Charles and the Brittany claimants. This branch died outwith Nicole, Ctss. of Penthievre, in 1479.

     Jean de Luxembourg , Seigneur de Ligny was buried at Church of Phalempin, Lille, Belgium. He was born circa 1316 at Ligny, Namur, Belgium. He was the son of Valeran II de Luxembourg , Comte de Beauvoir and Guiotte (Guyotte) Chatelaine de Lille. Jean de Luxembourg , Seigneur de Ligny married Alice de Richebourg-Flanders, daughter of Guy V Seigneur de Richebourg and Beatrix van Putten, on 10 July 1330.2 Jean de Luxembourg , Seigneur de Ligny died on 17 May 1364.1
