Dempsey, we have: “Besides his wife he is survived by … and one son, James, who is a member of the New York police force” However, in the 1913 Auburn Citizen obituary to his mother Ellen Dempsey, we have: “She leaves to mourn her loss one son, Edward Joseph of New York … ”
Personally, I believe the given name to be Edward Joseph.
