2. [S32] The Citizen Advertiser, AUBURN - Stephen Joseph Conboy, 52, recently retired from the Marine Corps, died Sunday, June 20, 2004, after a sudden illness. He retired Jan. 1, 2004, as a lieutenant colonel, after more than 32 years of active service.
   He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1971, rose through the ranks and was commissioned in 1982. He was stationed in many places throughout the world, including Vienna, Austria; Phnom Penh, Cambodia; Kabul, Afghanistan, and visited more than 125 countries in his official duties. He recently received his masters degree in history, and had planned to teach in the Prince William County, Va. school system. He was born in Auburn, to Elizabeth and Charles Conboy, both deceased. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Sharon Hanes of Auburn; and his brothers, Charles E. of Auburn, Edward J. of Littleton, Mass., and John F. of Albany; as well as four nieces, one nephew and many cousins.
   He was an avid fan of Notre Dame football and an enthusiastic gardener. He studied history with a passion, played golf with an unpretentious flair, and was always celebrating life. He remained a child at heart and always saw the joy in the everyday occurrences and scenes that are too often taken for granted by those in an all too busy life. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Triangle, Va. During his life, he had legions of people call him their best friend. His warm personality made people sit up and take notice when he spoke. His Marines loved him and his commanders valued his sage advice. He was the godfather to many and a friend to all. He will always live in the hearts of his family and friends, both the one he was born into, and the one he "adopted." He will be missed.
   Interment is to be conducted at 3 p.m. Aug. 9, in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for the Adopt-A-Family for Christmas Program, a charitable program that aids young Marines with families, during the holidays.
