Humphrey [Stafford], Earl of Stafford, &c., son and heir of Edmund, Earlof Stafford, , by Ann, sister and heir of Humphrey, [son of Thomas ofWoodstock] styled Earl of Buckingham, having succeeded his father 21 July1403, when but a year old, as Earl of Stafford, &c., appears to havebeen, in right of his mother, who died 16 October 1438, considered asearl of BUCKINGHAM. Knighted 22 April 1421, and was, in 1431, createdCount of Perche in Normandy, and was on 14 September 1444, created Dukeof BUCKINGHAM. P.C. 1424; K.G. 22 April 1429. Served several years inFrance; Lieutenant General of Normandy 1430-32; Seneschal of Halton 1439;captain of Calais and Lieutenant of the marches, 1442-51. Ambassador toFrance, 1446. On 22 May 1447, he had a grant of special precedence givenhim 'before all Dukes who might thenceforward be created, exceptingdescendants of the King's body.' Warden of the Cinque Ports and Constableof Dover and Queensborough Castles, 16 July 1450. A zealous Lancastrian,in which cause he was slain at the battle of Northampton.

He married, before 18 October 1424, Anne, 10th daughter of Ralph[Nevill], 1st Earl of Westmorland, being 4th daughter by his 2nd wife,Joan Beaufort, the legitimated daughter of John of Gaunt, Duke oflancaster. He died 10 July 1460 and was buried in the Grey Friars atNorthampton. His widow married in 1467, before 25 November, Walter[Blount], 1st Baron Mountjoy, who died 1 August 1474.
